BEGINNING READING PROGRAM REVIEW CITES IMPORTANCE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
A research review identifying proven beginning reading programs found that phonics is not enough to improve children's reading, reports Johns Hopkins University.
The review looked at hundreds of studies and identified 62 rigorous evaluations of approaches to improving the beginning reading success of children in kindergarten and first grade. The approaches studied included reading textbooks, technology, professional development, and a combination of textbooks and professional development. The review concluded that programs focusing on changing daily teaching practices, such as use of cooperative learning, have a greater impact than those focusing on textbooks or technology alone.
