When parents are involved in their children's education, their children do better in school. Though parents of English language learner (ELL) students may be wary of interacting with school officials, parents' participation is important for their children's academic success.
SAY (Social Advocates for Youth) San Diego produced this set of tips for parents. Topics include homework help, information about studying for tests, questions for parents to ask at parent-teacher conferences, and going to college. Each tip sheet is available in PDF format in English and Spanish versions.
Developed by the Education Trust, "this guide offers Latino parents a number of suggestions on how they can get involved in and be better advocates for the education of their children." The information offers Latino parents the tools to exercise their rights under applicable federal law and regulations.

The Encuentros Leadership website provides information about its programs aimed at encouraging and supporting Latino boys to succeed in school. Though initially supporting Latino biys in northern San Diego (California) County, its programs may serve as an example to teachers, parents, and Latino advocates in other communities.
