Guideline:

A team needs a purpose to guide its work toward accomplishing its goals. Giving the improvement team a defined charter specifying its role and purpose is one way of focusing its direction. It is the principal's responsibility to lay out the role and purpose for the school improvement team.

This link to the School Improvement in Maryland website provides a series of checklists identifying functions of a school improvement team. Though intended for Maryland schools, the checklists may be useful to school improvement teams in other states.

This Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) guide was designed to assist schools in implementing an effective team approach to school improvement. Though intended to support specific SREB programs, the content may be useful to a school organizing a school improvement team.

Developed by the five Comprehensive Technical Assistance content centers, the Handbook on Effective Implementation of School Improvement Grants aims to bolster the effective implementation of the intervention models and strategies outlined in the 2009 School Improvement Grant program. This section addresses school improvement teams.

This link is to the Oak Park (Illinois) Elementary School District 97 School Improvement Team Handbook. The handbook outlines the organization, purpose, roles, membership, and functions of school improvement teams in this district. Though specific to this school district, it may be a useful example for school improvement team organization.
