KnowledgeBases > The School Improvement KnowledgeBase > Element 2 > Activity 2 > Task 4: Establish Timeline for Developing Improvement Plan

Guideline:

Under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), a school identified for improvement by the state and district must develop or revise a school improvement plan for district approval within three months of identification. For schools receiving Title I funds, this requirement mandates the timeline for developing the improvement plan. Within the three-month timeline, major task milestones should be established with individuals or groups assigned to complete each milestone task. The principal's role is to monitor progress to assure the plan is completed before the due date.

Once a school is identified as in need of improvement, the principal has three months to produce an improvement plan. To do so within this specified time period requires a task schedule for developing the plan. The document suggests a thirteen milestone timeline that principals might use.

This article explains how to create a Gantt chart for scheduling project-related activities.

The handbook outlines the organization, purpose, roles, membership, and functions of school improvement teams in this district. Though specific to this school district, it may be a useful example for school improvement team organization.
