Organizing the communications effort and message is essential before executing any strategy. How the story is told may be just as important as the information conveyed.

This Education Leadership Toolkit document offers five guidelines for effective public engagement. The Education Leadership Toolkit was a project of the National School Boards Foundation under a grant from the National Science Foundation.

This link is to the Education Northwest document, The Power of Public Relations in Schools, outlining the basic components of a school public relations program.

Schools identified as being in need of improvement are required to communicate this to parents and inform them of how this designation affects their child. Prior to sending out written notices to parents, school leaders need to plan how they will handle resulting inquiries. The document suggests steps steps to take in the planning process.
