KnowledgeBases > The School Improvement KnowledgeBase > Element 4 > Activity 1 > Task 4: Incorporate Strategies Aimed at Academic Issues

Guideline:

The school improvement plan is to incorporate strategies grounded in scientifically based research to improve instruction in the core academic subjects and address the issues causing the district to identify the school for improvement. In this regard, the school's technical assistance provider is expected to help identify such strategies.

When incorporating its strategies, a school identified for improvement is to adopt policies and practices to ensure all students meet the state's proficient level by the 2013-2014 school year. Such policies and practices should address students in each designated subgroup (economically disadvantaged, from major racial and ethnic groups, with disabilities, and with limited English proficiency) as well as parental involvement, public school choice, and supplemental educational services.

This U.S. Department of Education guide offers "tools to educational practitioners that help distinguish practices supported by rigorous evidence from those that are not."

This resource is a summary of Works in Progress: A Report on Middle and High School Improvement Programs published by the Comprehensive School Reform Quality Center at the American Institutes for Research. The document offers educators and policymakers a summary of more than a dozen key issues facing middle and high schools, such as literacy and reading, English language learners, violence and bullying, and transition.

Developed by the five Comprehensive Technical Assistance content centers, the Handbook on Effective Implementation of School Improvement Grants aims to bolster the effective implementation of the intervention models and strategies outlined in the 2009 School Improvement Grant program. This section addresses monitoring the implementation process.

The National High School Center is one of 21 comprehensive centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The National High School Center serves as the central source of information and expertise on high school improvement for the Regional Comprehensive Centers.
