KnowledgeBases > The Adolescent Literacy KnowledgeBase > Element 3 > Activity 4 > Task 1: Communicate with School Board

Guideline:

Achieving improvement in adolescent literacy requires marshaling district resources. To do so, district and school educators need to inform and create awareness among local school board members about adolescent literacy development.

This link is to the Carnegie Corporation of New York's report addressing implementation costs associated with adolescent literacy programs. The report discusses the implementation of three example programs to illustrate the issues that should be addressed. The report may be useful to educators responsible for identifying program costs prior to presentations to district leaders and school board members.

This link is to a National Association of School Boards guide on improving adolescent literacy. As noted in the introduction, "The Next Chapter: A School Board Guide to Improving Adolescent Literacy gives school board leaders a set of research-based strategies that will allow them to work effectively with schools and communities to raise the literacy level of all students." This document provides an example about silent sustained reading. While the concept may be useful, the explanation does not provide a complete picture of the concept.
