The Adolescent Literacy KnowledgeBase : Element 3 : Activity 4 : Task 4: Be Aware of National Research and Policy Groups

Guideline:

National research and policy groups devoted to language arts and reading are information sources and advocates for adolescent literacy. Local educators should possess an awareness of these organizations.

This link to the Council of Chief State School Officers' Adolescent Literacy Toolkit provides resources for states and high school content area teachers.

This link is to the International Dyslexia Association website. As noted at its website, "The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is an international organization that concerns itself with the complex issues of dyslexia." 

The International Reading Association (IRA) is a non-profit organization committed to literacy development around the world.  According to the website, IRA "supports literacy professionals through a wide range of resources, advocacy efforts, volunteerism, and professional development activities."

This link is to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) website. The NCTE website offers resources on adolescent literacy at the middle and secondary school levels.

This link is to the National Institute for Literacy website. As noted at its website,"the National Institute for Literacy, a federal agency, provides leadership on literacy issues, including the improvement of reading instruction for children, youth, and adults. In consultation with the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services, the Institute serves as a national resource on current, comprehensive literacy research, practice, and policy."

As noted at its website, "The National Writing Project is a professional development network that serves teachers of writing at all grade levels, primary through university, and in all subjects."

This link is to the National Association of School Boards of Education's (NASBE's) State Adolescent Literacy Network. This website provides state-level activity related to adolescent literacy.

This link is to the Alliance for Excellent Education information on its Successful Readers initiative. The website provides links to numerous reports addressing adolescent literacy development.

This link is to The Florida Center for Reading Research website.

This link is to the Carnegie Corporation of New York's report proposes an agenda for advancing adolescent literacy for college and career success. The report also emphasizes the need to build statewide data systems to inform literacy instruction and include adolescent-literacy training in state professional development and teacher certification programs.

This link is to the Vaughn Gross Center for Reading and Language Arts website. Based at the University of Texas at Austin, the Vaughn Gross Center for Reading and Language Arts "is committed to providing leadership to state, national, and international educators in effective reading and mathematics instruction through its diversified research, technical assistance, and professional development projects."

As noted at its website, "the What Works Clearinghouse, established by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences, provides educators, policymakers, researchers, and the public with a central and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education."
