The grantee should have a system to track income and expenses with appropriate financial controls. Organizations extensively involved with grant funding will have a system in place. If the grant seeker is not familiar with their organization's financial controls they should contact the organization's financial officer. Questions about the funder's accounting requirements should be directed to the funding source.
This National Endowment for the Arts' (NEA) guide, from its Office of Inspector General, is intended to provide practical information on what is expected from grantee organizations in terms of fiscal accountability. While its use is intended for grantees receiving grants from the NEA, the provisions are generally accepted standards and may serve as an example for any grant seeker.
