The Positive Learning Climates KnowledgeBase : Element 2 : Activity 1 : Task 3: Study School Climate

Guideline:

A school's climate is impacted by the physical facility, interpersonal relationships between and among students, staff members, the school's neighborhood, programs/services, and academic performance. A school's climate impacts how well it is able to meet its state's academic performance standards. As a result, assessing the school's climate and its affect on its students is essential to improving academic performance.

The Evaluation Center at Western Michigan University provides a list of questions for evaluating school climate. The questions are organized into categories such as student-teacher relations, security and maintenance, administration, student-peer relations, and others.

This checklist is excerpted from U.S. Department of Justice's document, The Problem of Bullying in Schools. It lists some critical questions police should ask in analyzing the problem of bullying in schools, even if the answers are not always readily available. The answers to these and other questions will help police guide the school in choosing the most appropriate set of responses later on.

This worksheet may be useful in developing objective data about drug and violence problems in a school and the community it serves. Though the document is from the Indiana Department of Education, the content may be useful for all schools.

As noted at its website, "The School Safety Profiler is a free tool to measure perceived safety at your school, so you can reduce or prevent violence. The Profiler is designed to help you meet needs assessment requirements for school safety funds, as well as to guide you in creating a positive school environment."

These sample interviews and questionnaires were developed as part of a pilot program conducted at Sabal Palm Elementary School in Tallahassee, Florida.

Compiled by the Wellesley Centers for Women Project on Teasing and Bullying, this reference offers facts on the prevalence of bullying in America's schools. This fact sheet can offer useful information for school board and staff members.
