KnowledgeBases > The English Language Learner KnowledgeBase for Administrators > Element 6 > Activity 1 > Task 3: Implement School Professional Learning Program

Guideline:

Staff development must meet school district requirements. This could include professional learning in the following areas:

  • understanding processes/policies in the identification and exit of ELL students for both intake staff members and classroom teachers,
  • instructing alternative language program staff in carrying out the program model,
  • instructing content teachers on strategies for working with ELL students, and
  • instructing translators and staff members who will assist in the special education assessment process.

This article from the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) Policy Brief lists key questions to ask during the review of professional development policies and practices. Each major question has a list of supporting questions to be addressed.
