The Skiatook (Oklahoma) Public Schools' organizational approach for curriculum mapping focuses on supporting the teacher. The graphic below illustrates this premise with the teacher in the middle supported by the Superintendent, Curriculum Director, school site principals and team leaders, and the Curriculum Mapper software leaders. The overall intent is to position the teacher to fulfill the district's vision for curriculum mapping and apply curriculum mapping effectively as part of the instructional program.
Within Skiatook's organizational approach, the Curriculum Director trains, facilitates, and supports the principals in curriculum mapping. Issues addressed include
- the principal's role as instructional leader;
- how the principal can foster follow-through;
- how to see what is going on in classrooms with curriculum maps; and
- how to use the curriculum maps in professional learning communities, which then leads into examining data.
The Curriculum Director's goal is to encourage the principals to be the curriculum mapping site leaders. The Curriculum Director's role is to tie the district's instructional program together for alignment issues.
