KnowledgeBases > Planning - Answering Parents
The No Child Left Behind Act has notification requirements for a school upon being identified as in need of improvement. First, the school choice option is to be made available to students. Then, if the school continues in its improvement status, there is the supplemental services notice. Finally, if a school becomes subject to corrective action, there are additional notice provisions as well. Obviously, the aim of the notification requirements is to give parents options for their children and involve them in the education process.
Schools identified as being in need of improvement are required to communicate this to parents and inform them of how this designation affects their children. While administrators may send out the written notices, it is the front line staff of receptionists, administrative assistants and teachers taking parents' phone calls or receiving questions in person. These key people need to know what to do.
Before sending out notices to parents, school leaders need to plan how they will handle the inquiries. Essential organizing steps include the following:
- Design the process for executing a school choice transfer and enrolling in supplemental services.
- Prepare the training materials for the front line receptionists and administrative assistants.
- Train the front line receptionists and administrative assistants on the process and how they are to respond to parent inquiries on school choice, supplemental services, and potentially corrective action.
